PS:Gallery is proud to show "Signed with Reddish Earth" a video installation by Cherie Sampson.

Signed with Reddish Earth , a multi-channel video installation by Columbia artist, Cherie Sampson, presents video-performance footage created on a recent trip to the Camagüey Province, Cuba. 

The Maria Teresa cave, where the video-performance was made, is one of over 20,000 caves on the island of Cuba. It is a small cave, but unique as its modest pictographs were discovered in Cuba a few decades before the famous caves of Altamira and Lascaux were found in Europe.  A number of the caves in this region of Cuba have such pictographs, most often associated with ancient indigenous peoples.

Working within an intensely slow movement vocabulary, the artist's body in environmental performance becomes an extension of the architecture of nature and an embodiment of its temporal realities and cyclical change – often perceptible not in its infinitely gradual process, but as an after-image.  While evocative of the movement style of Japanese Butoh dance and other forms of experimental movement, Cherie's performance work is based in no single technique – it emerges as a sensory, bodily and spiritual response to the present environment. While a form of self-portraiture, it does not portray the self as personality as such, but an archetypal self that is at once an integral part of nature and distinguishable from it in our finite human journey.

This show will open with the True/False film festival and go through March 27th, 2010.
