Photo Emulsion Transfers on Paper

Chris Dahlquist has explored the timeless quality of imagery for more than a decade. In her past work she integrated her photographs with copper and aluminum, referencing the earliest photographic processes of tintype and daguerreotype. (To view her copper and aluminum work please go to http://www.chrisdahlquist.com.)

In this, her newest body of work, Chris explores new ways to reference the meaning of the past. She has eschewed the metal surfaces as a symbol of time passed and instead has emphasized camera technique, printing processes, and color to create ageless pieces. She leaves the viewer questioning the era in which the photograph was taken, inviting viewers, regardless of age, to recall their childhood. By placing her photographic images over her own watercolor paintings she has manipulated the color, making it appear as if the images were viewed in a dream. Just as with our own recollections of past events, the details become blurred so that the meaning and emotions emerge.

Childhood memories are at the fore as Chris brings her camera to her eye. First making and using a camera at the age of eight, she was hooked on photography. She continued to experience her world through her camera lens as she worked in both commercial photography and film before pursuing her own artwork. Chris' artwork can be seen around the country in galleries, museums and fine art festivals. Chris makes her home with her husband, Kyle, in Kansas City , Missouri .
