The works of Heinrich Toh

Inspired by memories of my heritage, traditions and fading customs, my work examines identity and experience within the cultural displacement that comes from relocation and travel. My work propels me to examine the fragility of tradition and identity, capturing what is seemingly familiar while providing me with a means to consider my identity relating to past and present cultural ties. My intent is a contemporary perspective on culture while capturing quintessential Asian flavors.

I use a combination of printmaking techniques like monoprints, gum litho & image transfer, photo etched plates and chine collés. My work is individually hand printed through an etching press multiple times to build rich layers of color, pattern, personal and contemporary imagery. These printed works on paper are also incorporated on to canvas and developed further as a painting.

I am a mixed media artist residing in Seattle, where I am an instructor and studio artist at the Pratt Fine Arts Center. I am a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, in Ohio and the La Salle College of the Arts in Singapore. When I am not making art, I cook a mean dish of noodles.
I exhibit around the country where my work is in public and private collections. My work was recently acquired for the Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas. I am also excited to be exhibiting at the Wing Luke Asian Museum from January till November of 2007 where I have an installation of works on paper.
